How Many Non-Originals Do You Know?
Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. –Romans 12:2
My wife, Donna, says that I think a lot. I cannot deny that. I always seem to be thinking “out there” regarding things that are not always easy to understand, and troublesome even when I put my thoughts to the difficult work of understanding. Are you like that? We could be real friends!
How many people do you know that seem to be unique, an original? How many with significant characteristics? When I was in high school (a couple of years back 😐), the fad was to act and speak as if one were not like any other. When people try to do that, they wind up imitating one another—in clothing, hair styles, music preferences, speech patterns, words used, and even technology toys used. It is almost, yet particularly true, that people refuse to be what God made them to be!
Sometimes I run into people that are looking for a miracle, and neglect to understand that they are already a miracle. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made! –Psalm 139:14 During my seminary years, I was disappointed to discover numbers of students forged their future on preaching imitating other preachers, rather than to function based on how God created them. They did not take the Spiritual Formation class seriously.
Before you get harsh, are you living your life in the knowledge of how God created you?
We, you, and I, are unique, specialists. God created us, not to do all things, but specific things that He planned years and years prior to our birth. He even does this with the flowers He created. Did you know that over 90% of our flowers have either unpleasant or no odors at all? It is those with sweet fragrances we remember. They stand out for their function brings joy!
A copy adapts themselves to the world; an original brings himself to the world to change those who cross their path. Paul was “right on” in Romans 12:2. Do not live your life copying the behaviors of the world; be the new and different person God has created you to be. When you do, you are bringing glory to your Creator, while bringing blessings to those surrounding you, those crossing your path.
Life Application
It does not take a majority to change the world around you. Just a few originals doing the work God expects make a difference in the world. Our great God expects us to move about in our world to make the nations glad. How are we doing?
You and I are the only ones in all of creation that have been gifted by holy God with our set of capabilities. We are truly special in God’s eyes. Why would we try to copy others, instead of being who God intended? He does indeed have a plan and purpose for our life.
Why would we be willing to miss what He has in store for us? God loves us too much not to challenge us to be us in His sight. Originals are hard to find, easy to recognize, and formidable in a world of deep need. Seek to be who God intended you to be. It will be a blessed life.
